1. What is the difference between
the National Organization and the local Affiliate?
The National Organization is the headquarters of the organization
based in Dallas, Texas. The Affiliates are in essence branch
offices. There are 122 Komen for the Cure Affiliates throughout the United States, as well as international Affiliates in Rome, Germany and Puerto Rico. Both the National Organization and its Affiliates fund
community-based breast health education and breast cancer
screening, treatment and treatment support projects through
awards to not-for-profit organizations that provide these
direct services. Funds are specifically directed toward the
medically underserved. In addition to these community-based
projects, the National Organization funds research, but does
not perform it. Each Affiliate sends 25 percent of its annual
revenue, after expenses, to National to fund national and
international breast cancer research. Visit National’s
website at www.komen.org
to learn more.

2. How close are we to a cure?
Every day brings us closer to a cure, but we are not there
yet. With more than 217,440 individuals diagnosed with breast
cancer on an annual basis, it is extremely important that
we continue to raise money and awareness for this issue. New
innovations in the treatment of the disease are helping breast
cancer survivors live longer and more productive lives. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is committed to raising $1 billion and finding the cures (we believe there will be more than one) in the next ten years.

3. Where does the money raised in
Denver go?
The Denver Affiliate funds projects in the areas of breast
health education and breast cancer screening, treatment and
treatment support. Seventy-five percent of net proceeds remain
in the Denver Affiliate’s service area, funding local
breast cancer projects through our established grants-making
process. Twenty-five percent of net proceeds are sent to the
National Organization to fund international and national breast
cancer research programs. Some money does go to expenses.
The Denver Affiliate is proud that it is able to keep expenses
to less than 18 percent of its annual revenues.

4. How many volunteers and employees
are involved with the Denver Affiliate?

and very lean staffing-wise. Hundreds of volunteers are
involved through committees, our Speakers Bureau, health
fairs, task forces, administrative assignments and special
events. The Komen Denver Race for the Cure® alone involves
approximately 1,200 volunteers. Nine employees are part
of the hardworking team of the Denver Affiliate. They include
the Executive Director, Director of Finance and Operations,
Director of Development, Director of Grantmaking, Education
and Volunteer Coordinator, Development Assistant, Administrative

12. Is it true that the Denver
Affiliate is funding Planned Parenthood and the Gay, Lesbian,
Bisexual and Transgender Community (GLBT) Center of Colorado?
We fund many breast health/breast cancer-related projects
within numerous organizations. While we have funded projects
with Planned Parenthood and the GLBT Center in the past, they
are not receiving funding in this current grant cycle Organizations
submit a new application each year and funding is awarded
based on the merits of a specific project. Funding is not
guaranteed from one year to the next.
Komen funding is restricted in that it may only be used to
provide the vital breast health services indicated in an organization’s
project proposal. Funds must be strictly tracked and may never
be mixed with an organization’s general operating funds.
Funding of a specific organization’s project in no way
constitutes our endorsement of that organization, its’
overall mission or any of the other services it may provide.
A complete list of the organizations receiving funding during
the current fiscal year is available by calling the Affiliate
Office at 303.744.2088 Ext. 300 or click on the “Grant
Recipients” section on our web site. Thank you for being
interested in where the money is going. It is extremely important
that all donors/potential donors know where their money goes,
and what we are doing to help in the fight against breast
cancer.
