FREE Breast Health Conference
11th Annual Multicultural Conference
Saturday, February 27
No matter our background or culture, every woman is unique and different. So, when it comes to our health and how we care for ourselves, not all women can be approached the same way. For more than a decade the Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has provided education, access and invaluable life-saving services to some of Colorado’s most underserved populations by hosting the Multicultural Conference.
The FREE Conference – which features culturally appropriate workshops aimed at specific ethnic groups, informational sessions with medical professionals and food and entertainment – offers the opportunity to understand our similarities and differences, share information and learn more about breast health.
RSVP: The Conference is free of charge but space is limited. Call 303-744-2088, ext. 309 to reserve your attendance NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 15TH.

Political Action
Oral Chemo Access Legislation

Roughly 18,900 Coloradoans were diagnosed with cancer in 2009. Fifteen to twenty percent will be diagnosed with a type of cancer where oral chemotherapy is the best and sometimes the only form of treatment. Clinically safe and effective orally administered chemotherapy anticancer medication has significantly increased the treatment option for cancer patients.
Unfortunately there is a significant cost barrier to patients who need these options. Intravenously administered chemotherapy is typically covered as a medical benefit requiring the patient to pay an office visit fee after all deductible obligations are met. On the other hand, orally administered chemotherapy is typically covered under a plans pharmacy benefit where many of these drugs require a high out-of-pocket coinsurance rate for the patient.
This legislative session, the Denver Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network are taking the lead on a bill that will make out-of-pocket costs for patients equitable, so that no one is financially penalized for getting the ‘wrong kind of cancer’ for which there is no IV option or for which an oral chemotherapy would produce best patient outcomes.
On Monday January 25, the Oral Chemo Access legislation, HB 10-1202, was introduced in the Colorado House of Representatives and is expected to be heard in front of the House Business Affairs and Labor committee on February 3. If you would like to be an advocate on this issue, please contact Jill Fricker at jfricker@komendenver.org. |

Celebrating Survivors
A Story of love and support

Saundra Robinson was a brand-new newlywed when she and her loving husband Marcus went to her annual mammogram. Her heart began to pound when the radiologist said she was suspicious of “white spots.” Marcus held her hand even tighter as she recommended a biopsy be done to confirm or rule-out her suspicions.
What the radiologist delivered was devastating news; Robinson had breast cancer.
Marcus became her stalwart pillar as they worked with their health care team to devise a treatment plan. Susan G. Komen for the Cure® became his number-one source of information about breast cancer, treatment options, support groups and finding the right resources. Developing a treatment plan can be overwhelming, but the resources Komen Denver Affiliate provided were instrumental in educating the Robinsons.
“There are days when life gets so busy that I forget that I’m a survivor. However what I don’t forget is that “I am the Cure” because I tell my story at every chance,” said Robinson.
