Where Your Monsy Goes

Overview

Since its inception in 1993, the Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has raised and distributed more than $25 million to greater Denver area nonprofit organizations focusing on breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs.  And, nearly $10 million to fund breast cancer research through the National Komen Award and Research Grant Program.

Seventy five percent of net proceeds raised here are returned to the Denver metro area in the form of grants.  In this current funding cycle, April 1, 2010 - March 31, 2011, Komen Denver Affiliate is funding 37 projects in the Denver metro area, totaling $2.7 million, funding everything from mammograms to mastectomies, mortgage payments and meals through qualified grantees.

2010 Grants Breakdown

The remaining 25 percent of funds is pooled with monies from 100+ cities that hold Races for the Cure. One hundred percent of that money is then distributed into the National Komen Award and Research Grant Program. Last year, the Komen Denver Affiliate raised $1 million for research. During the past 27 years, Komen has invested $400 million to fund research globally, starting with Komen’s first grant in 1982 for $28,000. A decade later, the annual total had grown to 21 grants worth $590,000 and 10 years after that, Komen distributed $21 million in research funds. Last year, Komen provided researchers worldwide with $60 million.  In the last three years alone, Komen has invested nearly $237 million for breast cancer research.

Komen for the Cure funds only breast health and breast cancer research and community programs. The Affiliate raises money primarily through events it hosts or benefits from throughout the year. Monies are awarded in April of the following year after the Race. So, this year’s monies will be awarded in April of 2010.  Granting cycles run from April through March.

During the last completed grants cycle (2009-2010) Komen Denver funding was responsible for:

5,943 mammograms;
1,708 patients received diagnostic services;
192 treatment services (surgery, radiation & chemotherapy);
28 women under the age of 40 were provided with treatment related services
